Regen Network launches strategic ecocredits partnership with Shamba Network

19 July 2022 — Today Regen Network announces a strategic partnership with Shamba Network to design ecocredits for smallholder farmers on Regen Registry. The Shamba platform will facilitate the creation of ecological assets by African farming communities by designating areas of regenerative agriculture implementation across the continent for farm finance collateralization.

In Africa, 33 million smallholder farmers may benefit from the design of ecocredits that can be used to unlock new farm financing streams. The continent of Africa contains 60% of the world’s arable land, and half of that land is degraded. Soil carbon sequestration represents half of the cropland mitigation potential. Smallholder farmers are highly vulnerable to climate shocks, such as inadequate rains which lead to failed crops and the inability of farmers to repay farm loans. These climate risks expand the risk profiles of smallholder farmers with formal financial credit and parametric insurance providers.

Kennedy Nganga, Founder of Shamba Network, says, “Shamba is excited to partner with Regen Network to build a solution that empowers farmers and other financially excluded groups. Through this work, rural farming communities across the world will gain access to the benefits of web3 which will help drive sustainable impact and improve livelihoods.”

By designing onchain ecological credits, African smallholder farmers can collateralize both land ownership and regenerative agriculture practice implementation in the voluntary carbon credit market, thus unlocking financial support for these intersectional communities. The Shamba ecological data oracle will support web3 applications to dMRV, leveraging geospatial analytics to quantify the impact of regenerative farming practices at all scales.

Gregory Landua, Regen Network Development, Inc. CEO says, “Shamba is innovating on one of the most important aspects for the success of regenerative finance and carbon markets: decentralized oracle networks and monitoring systems. Regen Network is excited for Shamba to be producing new types of ecocredits on Regen Ledger and integrating with the Regen data module to bring cutting edge monitoring to our community.”

Shamba Network is partnered with Regen Network to leverage the Regen Registry features, including the minting, retiring, and transfer of digital ecological assets on the Regen Ledger blockchain. Shamba will integrate with the Regen Registry to design, maintain, and govern ecological assets designed by Shamba farming communities in Africa.

About Shamba Network:
Shamba Network’s mission is to provide ecological data on-chain and use it to de-risk agricultural finance. Shamba Network is building a decentralized data infrastructure to power de-risking mechanisms such as insurance through its bespoke oracle network. Shamba will support farming communities to develop ecological assets that they can use to unlock financing, even as it provides data to power other applications in the web3 space.
